About FHSEstablished in September 2004, SFU's Faculty of Health Sciences offers one of Canada’s most comprehensive interdisciplinary programs in health sciences. Researchers and students from diverse disciplines work together on studies spanning "cell to society" and many apply this work in the context of population and public health. The faculty’s goal, says dean John O’Neil, is to support social, population, policy and natural science research in order to generate new knowledge about health on a global scale - and then apply this knowledge to improve the health and well-being of individuals, communities and societies. "Our cell-to-society focus in the areas of infectious disease, chronic disease, environmental and occupational health, mental health and addictions, and global health brings together experts from the biomedical sciences, social and policy sciences, and public health sectors. Together, they generate new knowledge and provide students with the skills necessary to tackle pressing health issues and affect positive change in the well-being of people in Canada and around the world." The Faculty is also committed to giving students practical opportunities to apply their knowledge in research laboratories and to engage with community health problems in B.C. and beyond. The Faculty currently has 44 faculty members, including seven Research Chairs.
