FAQ overview

Once I've decided on my classes, does it matter when I enroll?

Definitely, since classes fill up quickly. The enrollment appointment is the first time you are able to access the system to enroll in classes. Remember, if you do not enroll at your first opportunity, the selection of classes will rapidly diminish as other students, with a less opportune appointment date, enroll.

How do I know when my enrollment day is? Where do I find the details on how to enroll?

You will be notified by email of your enrollment appointment date and details of the enrollment process.

Students often get an excellent enrollment appointment for their first enrollment. Regardless, it is always a good idea to work out a few schedules in case your preferred class choices are not available.

If a class is full, can I get in later?

Perhaps. Students frequently make adjustments to their schedules, particularly in the first week of classes, and a spot you are trying to pick up may become available. You can keep checking class availability through go.sfu.ca.
Also, we do use wait lists when classes fill up. If the class you are trying to get into has a wait list, you can try the wait list process. For further info on the wait list process, please contact fhs_advising@sfu.ca. You may also speak to the Undergraduate Program Coordinator as to whether there is any plan to increase the class size.

Once I've enrolled and I'm happy with my schedule, do I have to do anything more?

It's always a good idea to confirm your enrollment by visiting go.sfu.ca before classes start.

How many units should I take in my first term?

It depends. Each student has different abilities, study skills, and responsibilities (such as work). Generally speaking, in your first term we recommend that you do not enroll in a full course load. A full course load is considered to be 15 units, which translates to about 15 hours of classroom attendance. You may think that this does not sound like much, however, there will be lots asked of you in terms of reading, homework, etc. It is best to start off with a lighter load—if you find that manageable, you can undertake more units in subsequent terms.

I always did well in high school, so I think I can do more than a full course load. Will the goSFU system allow me to enroll in as many units as I want?

Will the go.sfu.ca system allow me to enroll in as many units as I want?
No. The go.sfu.ca system will allow you to enroll in up to 18 units but no more. If you want to appeal to enroll in more than 18 units you will need to contact an FHS advisor to seek permission, email fhs_advising@sfu.ca

Will I fall behind if I enroll in less than a full course load in one term?

Not necessarily. The tri-semester system allows you to take classes year-round. The majority of students do not enroll in 15 units each fall and spring. If you take less than a full load one term, you can take additional classes during other terms.

If I want to drop a class later in the term but am refused permission, what will happen if I just stop going to class?

That would be a poor decision. If you abandon a class you will receive an "N" grade, which means you did not complete the class and this will have a very negative impact on your grade point average—the same impact as an "F" or failing grade.
