Kali Penney
BA in General Studies with a minor in Health Sciences
I randomly took one HSCI course and found it really interesting. I also have a cousin that did her MPH from SFU and she was excited about the program.
- What is your favourite Health Sciences course? Why? My favourite so far has been HSCI 140 – Complementary and Alternative Medicine. That course is great for generating discussion and for getting students used to thinking in a scientific way.
- Are you involved in volunteer initiatives within or outside of FHS? If so, please list these initiatives and tell us what prompted you to get involved with them? I volunteer every week with the Tupper Homework Club at Tupper high school. I go in after school and basically tutor kids who need help. I got involved because I thought it would be fun, which it is, and I think education is hugely related to health.
- Are you a Health Sciences Co-op student? If yes, what type(s) of Co-op work experience have you acquired? I have done one Co-op semester so far. I went to live in Kolkata, India for 4 months where I did a research project on adolescent health and put on health workshops for girls from slum areas.
- What are your career goals? I’ll definitely be in the health field. At the moment I am looking at either medical school or an MPH.
- What advice would you like to give potential or incoming Health Sciences students about being Health Sciences students at SFU? Get involved! I am only starting to get more involved in the program and I think it’s a really important part of the degree. You need to make connections, get to know the profs, get volunteer experience.
