 Endowed Chair in Health Economics of HIV/AIDS in the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS at St. Paul's Hospital

 

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS are seeking a health economist to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level as an Endowed Chair in HIV/AIDS.

This appointment is intended to add to the development of the HIV/AIDS research group at Simon Fraser University and at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. Specifically, this appointment will be expected to focus on the economic dimensions of HIV/AIDS, including its socio-economic determinants and their impacts on health, and the application of economic tools and analysis to an understanding of health and health outcomes in society. The candidate will have an established research record in the economic evaluation of harm reduction programs in the area of prevention of HIV/AIDS.  Further, the appointment is expected to fill a major leadership function in mobilizing and augmenting existing resources so as to build SFU’s expertise and reputation in this field and to strengthen the partnership between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. The successful candidate should have the training and commitment to be an outstanding researcher with a demonstrable interest in interdisciplinary research.

The candidate will be primarily interested in comparative outcomes research, which we define broadly as the acquisition and synthesis of knowledge that informs healthcare and public health practice and policy at the population level. Relevant study designs and analyses include, but are not limited to, clinical and community trials, large database analyses, survey research, literature synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and pharmacoeconomics for comparison of interventions that are behavioral, community and/or policy-related. The successful candidate will have a degree in Health Economics or related areas by the start of appointment, with expertise in economic evaluations, econometric methods, health-related quality of life measurement and/or decision analysis in public health and health care. The selected candidate will focus on the analysis of data, including administrative data and patient surveys, data dissemination and utilizing the data collected to conduct research to drive healthcare quality improvement and to guide health policy initiatives.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and expanding group of faculty who are developing collaborative, interdisciplinary research and educational programs in environmental and occupational health, global health, infectious diseases, chronic disease, mental health and addictions, health over the human life course, and social inequities and health. The vision of FHS is to integrate social, public health and natural science scholarship with population outcomes, societal application, and policy analysis to improve population and public health from local to global levels. This integration combines a broad spectrum of research approaches, methods of inquiry, and levels of analysis. The Faculty is committed to social justice, and aims to improve public health and reduce health inequalities locally, nationally and globally. FHS faculty have expertise in epidemiology, health inequities, global health, infectious diseases, neurobiology, molecular immunology, cell biology, molecular genetics, adolescent and child health, mental health and addictions, environmental and occupational health, health policy, collaborative community health research, and public health practice. FHS has collaborative agreements and partnerships with the BC government, regional health authorities, and provincial, national and international health agencies. Blusson Hall is the home of FHS and contains both wet and dry laboratories, including a biocontainment level 3 facility, in a building designed to integrate natural and social science practices.

Economist

Simon Fraser University - The Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and the Fraser Health Authority are seeking a health economist for a limited term Assistant Professor position to support applied research and education programs under development with the two organizations. The candidate will be expected to develop an independent externally funded research program, teach health economics in the FHS graduate/undergraduate programs, and conduct operational research to drive healthcare decision-making and to guide health policy initiatives in the Fraser Health region along some of the following dimensions:

  • Health economic analyses to support resource allocation decisions in FHA

  • Identification and interpretation of health economics research evidence to support healthcare planning

  • Identification and support for appropriate healthcare planning models

  • Economic assessment of new and existing health technologies

  • Analysis of economic impact of clinical practice variation

  • Identification and interpretation of appropriate analyses of benefit, utility and effectiveness

  • Support to the new Health technology Assessment Committee reporting to the Quality Performance Committee

  • Interaction with the small network of health economists currently providing consultancy support to MoHS or in academic positions at UBC

  • Contribution of health economics support to the work of the Institute of Healthcare Sustainability.

  • Assess economic impact of performance improvement at a system and individual level

 

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in Health Economics or related areas by the start of appointment, with expertise in economic evaluations, cost-effectiveness analysis and/or decision analysis in health care.
