Careers

Students graduating with an MPH from SFU's Faculty of Health Sciences will have acquired a range of competencies that qualify them to work in a variety of organizations, including public health agencies, hospitals and research institutes, and community and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These competencies will also enable graduates to pursue studies in medicine or related health fields.

Graduates will have the knowledge, skills and aptitudes to

  • Draw on evidence-based criteria to advocate health policy and program improvements
  • Implement population-based health needs assessments, risk assessments, and health promotion programs, and evaluate their effectiveness
  • Draw on both qualitative and quantitative methods to understand health determinants and apply results in policy development
  • Plan and undertake community-based research on a full range of health determinants, including biological factors, environmental toxins, behavioural factors, and social arrangements, especially social class and gender
  • Translate this research into disease prevention and health-promotion program planning, implementation and evaluation.
Growing awareness of the interconnectedness of public health and global health has been accompanied by an increased emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention, an increased demand for experts in environmental health and industrial hygiene, as well as a pressing need for public health practitioners with financial and business skills. Graduates will be equipped to work in such specialty areas as:
  • Change management in health care
  • Data management/bioinformatics systems
  • Disease surveillance and outbreak control and research
  • Disease prevention and health promotion
  • Workplace health and safety
  • Environmental and occupational health
  • Directing clinical trials
  • Work for community organizations dedicated to improving the health and welfare of their constituencies
