How do I apply
All prospective graduate students must apply through the Dean of Graduate Studies website. After being assigned an SFU ID and paying the application fee, you will receive further instructions through email. These instructions will guide you in completing your application through the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) on-line application system. All applications must be received and complete (including references and all supporting documents) by the application deadline. Incomplete applications are not processed.

Will I know when my application is complete?
YES. Prior to the admission deadline, you will be able to check the status of your application using the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) on-line system. Using this system, you will notify FHS once you have completely filled out all the required fields and uploaded all the required documents.
Does FHS admit students into the program more than once a year?
YES. The Master of Public Health and the Diploma in Global Health admit
students annually for the Fall semester only. The MSc admits students
three times a year: Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.
Should an MPH applicant contact faculty about supervision?
NO. Admitted MPH students are assigned temporary supervisors before the start of their academic year. In their second semester MPH students are expected to identify a senior supervisor and to formally notify the Dean of Graduate Studies (through the Supervisory Committee form). Applicants should not get in touch with faculty/potential supervisors unless they have a well articulated prospectus stating their research and/or practitioner interests and have a good sense of a faculty member's research.
Should an MSc applicant contact faculty about supervision?
YES. MSc applicants require the support of a supervisor for consideration at admission. Before contacting a faculty member/potential supervisor, MSc applicants should have a well articulated statement of research interests, and have a good knowledge of a faculty member’s research.
Should a Diploma applicant contact faculty about supervision?
NO. Diploma students are supervised by the Director, Graduate Programs.
When I apply to the MPH program, do I have to know what kind of practicum I want to complete?
NO. You are not required to have specific practicum sites or preceptors in mind. You should have a good idea what you want to get from the practicum, and whether you are looking at local, regional, national or international opportunities. If you are admitted to the program, the practicum coordinator will help give clarity to your goals and objectives as part of the Practicum Preparation Seminars course (HSCI 901). It is also part of the role of the senior supervisor to help you clarify your practicum options and to help you connect with preceptors in areas of interest.
What are the tuition fees for this program?
Master of Public Health and Diploma students pay per term credit fees. For the 2011/2012 academic year, students will pay $257.50 per credit.
• MPH Master’s project stream students pay $257.50 per credit hour (x 47 credit hours = $12,102.50 based on 5 semesters of course work.
• MPH Master’s thesis stream students pay $257.50 per credit hour (x 50 credit hours = $12,875.00 based on 5 semesters of course work.
- MPH Thesis stream students normally take 6-12 months longer to complete the program. For tuition fee information refer to the SFU Calendar.
- MPH fees are based on two years or 5 semesters of work (including the summer term) and do not include student activity fees of approximately $270.00 per semester, or books (about $700). See typical costs to students http://students.sfu.ca/financialaid/costs.html
Master of Sciences students pay per semester fees which will increase by 2% for the 2010/2011 academic year.
• MSc Thesis stream students pay $1629.00 per term or $4,887.00 for the 2011/2012 academic year. The number of courses required is determined in consultation with your Senior Supervisor.
Does FHS consider applicants without an undergraduate statistics course?
YES. Applicants without a first year undergraduate statistics course will be considered for admission conditionally, upon completion of an undergraduate statistics course, or they will be expected to complete our Fundamentals of Biostatistics (HSCI 800) course or an equivalent course in the final summer term before beginning the MPH program. This course does not count toward the MPH degree.
What are the typical costs for domestic and international students?

Do International Students at SFU pay differential fees?
NO. International graduate students do not pay differential fees
Do Diploma applicants have to meet the same standard as MPH applicants?
YES. Diploma students must have a minimum 3.30 grade point average, and are expected to meet the same qualifications as MPH applicants. .
Does SFU offer support services for International Students at SFU?
YES. SFU International offers a range of services to help International Students adapt to their new circumstances.
What is the deadline for applying to the Master of Science program?
- For fall entry, February 1
- For spring entry, June 1
- For summer entry, October 1
Should I apply for residence housing before I am admitted to the program?
YES. Housing assignments are allocated on a "date-received" basis. The earlier your application is received by the Housing and Residence office, the better chance of securing residence housing for the start of your first semester.
