Who makes admission decisions?
An admissions committee is struck every academic year. It is comprised of faculty who review completed applications for evidence of the applicant’s intent and purpose in studying public health, past academic performance, program-specific academic potential, professional and life experience, English fluency (where required), and other factors such as an applicant’s compatibility with faculty expertise and program directions.
Does the admissions committee look at cumulative grade point averages?
YES. Cumulative Grade Point Averages and the last sixty credit hours (last two years) are documented and where necessary, converted to a 4.33 system (SFU’s grading system).
Are other factors outside of academic qualifications taken into account?
YES. References, and professional and volunteer experience, second language acquisition, program-specific fit, and applicant’s compatibility with faculty expertise and program directions are considered.
When can I expect to hear if I am admitted?
Following adjudication, admitted students will be notified by email through the FHS Online Application system. The email will be followed by an official letter with an Offer of Admission from the Faculty of Health Sciences. MPH and Diploma Applicants can expect to hear as early as March 15th. The Faculty of Health Sciences will continue to admit students until it reaches its enrollment targets..
If I am not offered admission, what are my options?
You can re-apply the following year. You are welcome to make arrangements with the graduate program director or coordinator to discuss your application and the ways that your application can be improved.
If I reapply do I have to resubmit all application materials a second time?
YES. We are able to use your transcripts again. However, it is in your best interest to resubmit updated reference letters, CVs, Letter of Intent, etc.
If I am admitted to the program how do I enroll in courses?
The Dean of Graduate Studies office has provided a step by step description of the process for enrolling in a graduate program and in graduate courses at Simon Fraser University.
If I am admitted to the program how do I pay my fees?
The Student Services website has a step by step description of the process for paying fees. Master of Public Health and Graduate Diploma students pay "per unit" fees (credit hour fee). PhD and Master of Science students pay "per term" fees (semester fee).
Can I take Health Sciences courses if I am not an SFU student?
YES. With appropriate approvals, graduate students from outside the Faculty of Health Sciences can take health sciences courses as non-degree students or through the Western Deans' Agreement (WDA):
Non Degree Applicants:
Applicants must apply online to be a non degree student. On that application you must indicate the Health Sciences course(s) you are hoping to take. In addition to the online application, you must provide us original post secondary transcripts. The graduate program office will circulate the application to the instructor to seek approval for admission to the course(s). If approved into the course(s) by the instructor(s), and the director of graduate programs the admission will be processed. The non degree student will be formally notified by the Dean of Graduate Studies of their admission to SFU to take the course(s). Following formal admission you must pay a deposit to confirm registration. The graduate program coordinator will register you in the course. Non degree students should use go.sfu.ca to view their account and pay their fees.
Western Deans' Agreement:
Non SFU students attending a university within the Western Deans' Agreement (WDA) can take SFU Health Sciences courses for credit with the approval of the host and home institutions. To attend a SFU course through the Western Dean's Agreement the student/applicant must complete the WDA form which is available from the Dean of Graduate Studies or from their home institution. With approval from the home and host institution, WDA students are formally admitted to SFU and must pay a deposit to confirm registration. The graduate program coordinator will register you in the course. WDA students admitted to SFU use go.sfu.ca to view their account and pay their tuition fees.
Can I have my admission deferred?
All requests for deferrals should be directed to the graduate program coordinator. In the past, the granting of deferrals has depended on the recommendation made by the admissions committee, and is based in part on the number of admissions and quality of applications.
